Located in the Catoctin Mountain State Park, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources maintains this stream as a Catch-and-Release fly-fishing only area. Big Hunting Creek is a small stream ranging from 15-30 feet across and not more than a foot or two in depth in most places. Easy road-side access and 16-20 inch trout make this a premiere area trout stream. It runs through Maryland's Cunningham Falls state park and the National Park Service's Catoctin Mountain Park.

The main stretch of Big Hunting Creek is maintained as catch and release, fly fishing only. Spinning gear and natural baits are not allowed.
